VIBE! By: Charlotte Duncan, Aliyah Brown, and Rebecca Reh
Daniel Hand’s show choir, VIBE, is widely known for its outstanding number of wins and competitive awards. They are currently ranked among the top five show choirs in the nation. VIBE has been directed by Ron Soja, head of Hand’s music department, for the last 25 years,
Mr. Soja found his love for music at a very young age. At the age of 6, he started taking piano lessons. At the age of 13, he was asked by his priest to play the piano and direct the choir for his local church. As high school ended, Soja started thinking about college. He was going to major in computer programming, but he was offered a full-time job at his church. This surprising turn of events in Soja’s life would make a significant impact on his future as he accepted the position of head music director at his church; he was in charge of all the weddings, funerals, masses, choirs, etc. Soja’s initial decision was to do this job for a year and then do some other form of work. He thought that this experience would be monumental for him considering his great love for music. Inspired, he then went to a music & arts school and his previous experience in the music industry gave him a leg up on his peers.
VIBE is known for its amazing shows. Each year they pick a new theme/story to base the show around. This year's theme is Pirates. On January 12th, 2025 Vibe held their annual Cabaret which allowed the community to see the performance before the competition season. The Cabaret featured talented senior soloists who sang a song that was meaningful for them before they graduate and officially say goodbye to VIBE. Members of VIBE captivated the crowd’s attention with their outstanding vocals and harmonies, as well as their exceptional costumes, hair, and makeup.
Vibe’s next competition of the season is March 1st in Somerset, Massachusetts. The season will culminate with a trip to Nashville, TN.
