College on the Horizon : by Monroe Rioux
Over the past few months at Daniel Hand High School, many seniors have been applying for undergraduate college programs and are now making decisions on what schools they will be attending. They have until Commitment Day, May 1st, to make their final decisions.
Claire Morris, a senior at DHHS, is currently narrowing down her college decision.
Morris said she was somewhat not looking forward to college. She said that since she has only lived in Madison, she is worried about the shift to a new environment. She said the main factors she is considering while making her decision are the size of the school, the student population, and the quality of the campus. She said that financial aid is not as much for her, but that it is definitely something that can stop people from attending college.
“I’ve heard from plenty of friends where it’s like: ‘I wanted to go here, but they either said I was lying about how much I could pay or they just didn’t give me enough,’” Morris said.
Senior, Riley Haupricht has committed to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
She said one of the biggest factors when making her college decision was finance.
“I’m not trying to go to college and then be stuck with a bunch of debt,” Haupricht said.
She said that she didn’t understand why she would go to a more “prestigious” college for more money when she could go to a cheaper university and get the same education. She said that the college application process this year was the most stressful experience of her life.
Seniors trying to make their college decision can consult the admissions and financial aid offices of their universities, as well as find information online about other factors to consider when making a decision.
